Why Gratitude Important Even When Its Hard

We all know in theory that we should be grateful for what we’ve got, but bringing gratitude into practice can be a bit more challenging for some than others. Unfortunately for most of us, our modern lifestyle runs contradictory to what is necessary for experiencing gratitude, but with a bit of conscious effort and consistency, we can manifest this experience more often in our daily life and gain substantial benefits as a result.

Why Is Gratitude Important?

Besides allowing you to enter a more mindful state, gratitude gives you a number of psychological and even physical benefits. For starters, gratitude essentially acts like a shield against negative and toxic thought patterns. There’s even evidence that gratitude can help combat the severity and frequency of depression. That’s because feeling gratitude eradicates the emotions of envy, regret and resentment – all of which heavily detract from our overall happiness.

Not only does experiencing gratitude increase your level of happiness, it also raises your self-esteem. That’s because recognizing all of the gifts that have been bestowed on us actually makes us realize our own value and worth. This realization can be truly life changing for obvious reasons.

If you need any more convincing about the importance of practicing gratitude, you should know that people who do, are more resistant to stress, which naturally increases their immune system and decreases blood pressure.

Why Is Practicing Gratitude So Hard?

There are a number of reasons why feeling grateful in our daily lives becomes a real challenge. Of course it doesn’t help that the very basis of our society is built on rampant consumerism, which pushes the idea of scarcity onto us even when we’ve got more belongings than we know what to do with. This worldview only focuses on the things we don’t have yet and the things we want, making gratitude fundamentally impossible.

In other cases, we also become entwined in our own victim narrative and start to view ourselves as a target of unfair circumstances. While there are certainly times when someone is actually harming us and gratitude is really not an appropriate reaction, there are other instances when we fall victim to our own perspective.

It’s easy to see why true feelings of gratitude can be hard to achieve if we’re conditioned to feel as victim of our own perceived deficit. Yet, with persistent practice, gratitude can thrive in the most unlikely of places and circumstances.

Looking For Gratitude In Our Daily Lives

Being grateful requires us to recognize our blessings from external forces and to humble ourselves before them. Even if you don’t naturally default to feelings of gratitude, don’t worry – practicing gratitude consistently actually changes your brain and rewires your synapses to experience more frequent feelings of gratitude.

Something as simple as a journal can help put you in the right perspective when you’re feeling a bit out of tune. On the other hand, practicing gratitude should not become a chore in itself, so if writing in a journal daily is more daunting than inspiring, give yourself the flexibility to find a practice that works for you.

Whether that’s going over thoughts of gratitude in your mind, journaling a few thoughts or taking mindful moments during a walk to appreciate and be thankful, incorporating gratitude into your daily life will bring you incredible benefits.
