8 ways to create more engagement with your social media content
It’s called social media for a reason. But you already knew that, of course! You’re on ALL the platforms, and you love interacting with your friends and family.
But when it comes to your online business, do you struggle to create true engagement?
How can you remain authentic across all platforms, keep up with comments, posts and contribute to others in your online space, while trying to grow your business?
Let’s get back to basics and stop worrying about the vanity metrics of numbers of followers / friends etc. for now.
Sure, that’s important but it will only happen properly when you have the basics right.
It starts by growing your following, and just as in other platforms, this is a two-step process.
(Ok, it’s really 3 steps, but we’ll get to the content part in a later step.)
For now, we’re going to concentrate on finding and following the right people.
These will be:
Influencers in your market
Your dream clients
Connecting with these people serves two purposes:
1. When you pay attention to what the “influencers” are doing when it comes to content sharing, hashtags, posting frequency and other elements, you’ll get a better feel for what works best for your audience. This does not mean copy their strategy! It means look at what works, try it on for your brand and niche and see what fits for you.
2. When you pay attention to what your dream client is sharing and commenting on, you’ll learn what’s most important to them, and that will allow you to reach them more effectively.
And there’s a third benefit to finding and following others in your niche, influencers or newbies: people follow back. It's all about being social, so you’ll find that many of the people - maybe even most of them - will follow you back. Not only will you be gaining insight into what your clients need and want, but you’ll be growing your following as well.
Once you have those areas covered, it’s time to get engaged!
8 ways to create more engagement with your social media content
We focus here on Facebook and Instagram, but many of the approaches can apply to other social media platforms too.
1) Get interested
On Instagram, intentionally engage with your current audience by not only responding to their interaction with your account, but also engaging with their account as well.
How?
Engage daily with at least 10 of the accounts that are following you. This means going to your Followers list, tapping on each of their profiles and meaningfully engaging with their content - like their photos, leave meaningful comments, watch and interact with their stories, or direct message them.
Be authentic and offer value. Not just vague comments. Every single interaction is showcasing your brand, your vision, your values.
NOTE: Be sure not to exceed 20 interactions in a 60 minute period. Instagram may think this is a bot instead of you and you could get temporarily blocked.
2) Have a hashtag strategy
Use hashtags on every single post. Using the explore feature on Instagram is a great place to start, as well as some of the free tools out there. But this should form part of your overall content strategy anyway (if you don’t have a content strategy, let’s talk!)
Engage with the hashtags that you're using in your posts. Go to the explore page, search for each of those hashtags and go interact (like, comment, watch stories) with them. You also have the ability to follow those hashtags so posts using them come up in your feed.
3) Be on time
The most productive interaction on Instagram happens within the first hour after posting. If someone comments within that hour, make sure to respond right away (if possible). This improves your algorithm by telling Instagram you are an engaged user and contributor.
The same applies for Facebook; respond meaningfully to all comments as quickly as possible.
4) Get curious
On your Facebook posts, regularly look at who has reacted to your posts. You can do this by clicking on the number of reactions. A list of those people comes up and it will tell you whether or not each person has "Liked" your page. If they haven't, make sure to click or tap on the "Invite" button. This can help increase your following with an already engaged audience.
5) Show (authentic) gratitude
When someone comments on your post on Facebook, this allows you to message their account as your Facebook business page. Don't be spammy, but a thank you message can go a long way.
6) Get local
Use a GEO tag on every post. You have the ability to tag just the city but you can also tag a landmark or a business.
Why?
Doing this will increase the likelihood that one of your posts will show up in someone's explore page or search result based on their own location. It doesn’t matter if your business is purely online, it helps boost your SEO and searchability in a quick and easy way.
7) Invite them to the party
Tagging companies you work with or brands or products that you use can also increase the reach of your audience as you may have that company or brand in common.
Be authentic in this though and of course if you are affiliated with the company in any way, or sponsored by them, you must disclose this (check the # or info they wish you to use - usually something like #ad #sponsored etc.)
Bonus tip: We see so many missed opportunities for our clients when they don’t include their social buttons on their website, email signature or digital documents. People just expect to see this now so make sure you cover your bases and invite your email list and social media followers to interact with you across multiple platforms.
