8 Tips To Overcome Imposter Syndrome
Have you started a new business but don’t feel like you belong? You love what you do- that’s why you wanted to do this as your job after all! So why does something still feel off?
If this sounds like you, you might be suffering from imposter syndrome. This is a totally common thing for entrepreneurs and can be crippling to their business. But don’t stress! We are here to help you overcome imposter syndrome and rock your business!
What Is Imposter Syndrome?
Imposter syndrome is when you are unable to internalize your accomplishments and always feel like a fraud. You constantly doubt yourself and have a persistent fear of failing. A compulsion for perfectionism is often so crippling it can stop your business before it starts.
Who suffers from it?
Imposter syndrome is very common in the entrepreneurial community and often plagues women more than men. While it’s not exclusive to online entrepreneurs, starting and building an online business seems to multiply the effects of the syndrome.
It can show up as procrastination, lack of confidence in making decisions, and inaction. This is called “analysis paralysis” and can tank an entrepreneur and their business if they are not careful.
If this sounds like you, there is hope! It is possible to overcome imposter syndrome and still have a thriving business.
How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome
1) Let yourself feel it
Ignoring your feelings will not make them go away. Face them head-on and acknowledge what is happening. If you embrace and accept where you are at you can move forward and fix the problem.
2) Identify why you feel that way
Sometimes this might be hard to do, but there is a trigger for your feelings of insecurity. Does putting your face out there on your website or social media give you cold sweats? Maybe the thought of trying to sell products or yourself as a coach makes you uneasy. Does your head spin when you try to create a website or learn about SEO? Whatever it is, there is a way around it.
3) Don't compare yourself to others
Theodore Roosevelt’s quote about comparison being the thief of joy also applies to being an entrepreneur. You and your business are unique and special! Don’t tarnish that by comparing yourself to something or someone else.
4) Recognize your worth
Recognizing your limitations is important, but so is understanding your strengths. Cultivate confidence in yourself by seeing your strengths and using them. You bring something special significant to the table that nobody else has. Don’t sell yourself short by trying to be somebody else’s definition of perfect. Having trouble seeing your strengths? Start a success diary where you write down your wins and successes in your job. You will find you are worth more than you think.
Celebrating small victories is a great way to start cultivating confidence. Getting your first email subscriber. Booking your first client. Selling your first product. No matter how small, every little victory is worth celebrating!
5) Keep pushing forward
Even though you may feel like hiding under the covers and giving up, don’t do it! Quitting when you already feel like a failure is only going to make you feel worse. Look at yourself in the mirror and remind yourself just how amazing you are. If you’re still not feeling confident, just fake it til you make it. Pretending to be confident can actually change your brain to make you more confident (research says so!).
6) Practice gratitude
Practicing gratitude is important for everyday life, but it can be especially helpful in overcoming imposter syndrome. Writing down specific things you are grateful for every day will help you put things in perspective.
7) Stay in your lane
This goes along with not comparing yourself to others. Don’t get caught up in what others are doing and think you need to be doing the same thing. Just because another coach is holding daily zoom meetings with her clients doesn’t mean you should be doing the same. Focus on your goals and motivations. You do you. When you are authentic, success (and clients) follows.
8) Find a mentor
It is important to surround yourself with people who believe in you and who can help you on your entrepreneurial journey. Join Facebook groups, find a mentor, ask other entrepreneurs you know for advice. There are a lot of badass women out there who would love to help you. You are not in this alone!
Feeling like an imposter is normal when starting a new and exciting journey. Always come back to your “why.” Why did you start this journey in the first place? Was it to help other women overcome what you went through? Maybe your business gives you freedom and flexibility to raise your kids while earning a great income. Whatever your reason, tapping into your motivation can remind you that you are a rock star and you can do this!
