What is Holding You Back: Goal Setting Tips for Network Marketers
What’s holding you back from earning your desired salary? You’re talented, smart, and cute — so why aren’t you rich and famous yet? You might think it’s a matter of luck, or time, or just not “getting there yet.” But the fact is, it usually comes down to your goals and whether you’ve set yourself up for success.
People tend to think of goals as these wafty wishes that you can vaguely work toward. But the top-performing coaches and marketers know that goals are highly structured, measurable tools for success. Here’s how you’re holding yourself back with poor goal-setting — and how to fix it.
Know how to structure your goals.
The best goals are SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-Bound. Let’s break down each of these aspects:
Specific: Saying “I want to earn more money” is not a goal. Everyone wants that. A specific goal has a particular shape and outcome. How much do you want to earn, in dollars (or your preferred currency).
Measurable: Once you have something specific, you can measure it. A vague that you’re “growing” isn’t very motivating. Businesses set key performance indicators to assess their growth. Your goals deserve the same consideration!
Achievable: It’s great to be ambitious, but don’t set your goals at such a high level that you immediately get frustrated and give up. No one “gets rich quick”: it’s hard work, so be sure you build that work into your goals.
Realistic: Going along with achievable, your goals need to be realistic. While hard work is important, it (sadly) can’t bend the rules of physics or space-time. It takes time to build your brand, grow your network, etc. Make sure that your goals work within these limits.
Time-Bound: Ever heard of Parkinson’s Law? It’s the rule that work expands to the time given to fill it. That means that goals without deadlines are just going to keep being that thing you put off. Give yourself urgency by time-bounding your goals, and you’re more likely to achieve them.
Know Your WHY
As you probably know, brands have a “Why” that shapes their marketing. When we talk about the buyer’s journey, we know that the “Why” motivates their efforts. Your goal-setting needs a “Why” as well. When you say you want to earn more money, why do you want to do it? What kind of lifestyle do you envision for yourself with your desired salary? What dream is really behind that interest in earning big bucks?
Knowing your “Why” means that you can envision your success. Without vision, it will be much hard to make progress on your journey. Visualizing your goals puts you in the mindset to achieve them. Think of it this way: If you’re sitting there, spinning your wheels wondering why you haven’t succeeded yet, you’re wasting valuable time and energy you could be spending on getting those goals! That’s why you have to start each day with the mindset that you’re already living the type of life you want.
Change Your Negativity into Affirmations
Developing and running a business is hard. Anyone who says otherwise is selling you something. So, while you may have your SMART goals and Why all laid out, you need a healthy dose of motivation to make them happen. Where does that come from? Visualizing your success is part of it, but you also need to practice affirmations.
Many creative, entrepreneurial people get down on themselves. That’s the surest way to derail your potential success. Whenever you’re tempted to punish yourself or think “I can’t do this,” change that feeling into a positive affirmation. Instead of saying, “It’s impossible,” say, “I am possible.” Instead of saying, “I’ve failed,” say, “I’m working toward [insert SMART goal here].”

Whether you’re a coach, network marketer, or MLM, goals give your daily life the structure and drive you need to succeed — and make more money. If you’re vague, unfocused, or just downright negative, you’re only holding yourself back. Make your SMART goals, tie them to your Why, then practice daily affirmations to keep yourself on track.
