5 Ways Entrepreneurs Can Crack the Pinterest Code

You may know Pinterest as the place to find cute gift ideas or a new recipe to try, but if you are an entrepreneur it is so much more than that! With over 400 million users every month, it is the perfect place to connect with your audience and drive massive traffic to your blog. Cracking the Pinterest code may seem daunting if you are a new blogger, coach, business owner - or just new to Pinterest, but it really isn’t rocket science.

Keep reading to learn about five ways entrepreneurs can crack the Pinterest code.

1) Use high quality images to attract customers

Since Pintrest is a visual search engine (think Google but with pictures), it is crucial that your pins stand out from the crowd. To do this, your pin must first have the right dimensions. The standard size for your pins should be 600 x 900 pixels, or a 2:3 aspect ratio, and should always be in portrait view.

Pro tip: If you use Canva, they have pre-set templates you can use.

The image you use for your pin has to be high resolution, vertical orientation, and should follow your branding. In addition to these technical requirements, your images need to be beautiful, tasteful, and eye catching to make people want to click on them. If you are creating a pin about food, the food must look appealing. You can use your own images or find quality free stock images on various websites.

Pro tip: Never, never, never use other people’s images for your pins - Pinterest will not rank your content but could also shut your account down, so be extra careful to select images you have the right to use.

The goal of your pin is to inspire your customers to want to use your product or show them an aspirational lifestyle product or idea in action. When creating your pin, just think of your target audience and what would catch their eye and make them want to click to learn or read more.

2) Master your keywords

In order for the right people to find your content on Pinterest you must master your keywords. Keywords are a specific word or group of words in a niche or topic that allows Pinterest to group pins together. This makes it easier for people to find the content they’re searching for. For example, if you’re searching for “how to save money”, Pinterest will pull all pins that have those words connected to it, so if you have content around ‘how to save money for college’ or ‘how to save money before having a baby’ or ‘how to save money on one income’ - Pinterest will decide which is the most relevant content for that user. It’s a great way to build up content around your niche and attract a super targeted audience.

Once you have researched keywords for your niche and chosen ones that apply to your pin you should put them where they will work for you. Your keywords should be in your profile, boards, description, business name, board title, board description, and especially in your pin description. Placing keywords in the right places will ensure that your customers will find you.

Pro tip: The Pinterest search bar also offers a great way to learn what people are searching for so you can create relevant and meaningful content that your target audience would love.

3) Drive traffic to your website

In order to drive traffic to your blog, you need to claim your website on Pinterest. Don’t freak out if you’re not familiar with writing code. Claiming your website is a simple and painless process and one that is well worth the effort.

Just like social media has done this past year, Pinterest is changing its algorithm and if you want to ensure success on the platform, you need to be familiar with it. Don’t let the free traffic from Pinterest to your website slip through your fingers because you didn’t do your homework.

A crucial factor in following Pinterest’s algorithm is adding fresh pins and new content regularly. What is a fresh pin? According to Pinterest, a fresh pin is a new image or video that has not been uploaded to the platform yet. The fresher the content is, the higher priority it will receive in the Pinterest algorithm. Even better news, adding a new image to an old blog post will be recognized as fresh content by Pinterest!

4) Optimize your Pinterest profile

Whether you created a Pinterest business account from scratch or converted your personal account, it is a smart idea to review your Pinterest profile to ensure that you have it set up properly. Having an optimized profile is important because it can attract ideal clients and increase your views and followers (that’s a big deal!).

First and foremost, your username and business name need to include keywords related to the niche you are trying to reach. Next, your bio/about me section should be a short and sweet intro to your business that also includes the main keywords from your niche.

Optimizing your Pinterest profile should also include overhauling your Pinterest boards. Each and every board on your profile should be assigned a category and include a description with keywords from your niche. Setting a board as your “featured board” is an excellent way to promote your blog by dedicating it to your blog and content. This is huge because your featured boards are the first thing people see when they come to your profile.

5) Optimize your pinning strategy

Getting your content viewed on Pinterest really is a numbers game, and to stay in the game you must have a kick-ass pinning strategy in place. Researching pinning strategies can make your head spin, but there are some solid guidelines you should be following no matter what strategy you use.

A strategy to remove from your Pinterest toolbox in 2021 is that of duplicate pins. This is the practice of pinning the same pins to multiple boards repeatedly. Pinterest recognizes this strategy as spam and it could actually damage your account success.

Above all else, you should be pinning consistent, relevant, and high quality content daily. Your own content should be pinned first in order to rank as most relevant and you should create ten images per new content per week. Between your content and other relevant content to pin, you should be pinning a minimum of five images per day and no more than 25.

If the thought of pinning this much every day makes you exhausted already, don’t worry, there is scheduling software to help you in this endeavor (and we will cover that in another post).

Pinterest is an amazing tool to drive free traffic to your website, make more sales, create brand awareness and build an engaged audience of buyers. It’s also a relatively low cost platform to use and you can easily leverage all the free benefits from it.
