Top 3 Traits of the World's BEST Coaches
We think a lot of advice about what makes a good coach or mentor is just too...broad. "Wants to help others succeed. Has a kind and positive attitude. Is willing to put in the time to mentor others. Is a natural leader." All these pointers are great, the problem is that you KNOW them already!
So this time around, we want to give you a few of our coaching and mentoring tips that are a bit less conventional, but very important:
1. You are able to truly motivate others
Like we said, the "typical tips" on being a good coach are great. For example, that you like helping people, or that you're good with people...But even more important than any of these things is your ability to encourage / motivate / inspire your students to ACTUALLY achieve their goals and ambitions. That is the service you're selling, after all, isn't it? The ability to help others improve themselves - aka the transformation. We know a lot of students will report success, but in order to be a good coach, you have to go the extra mile and make SURE they are making progress on their goals. Make sure that if your students say they are working towards something, it's not just talk! And this doesn’t mean chasing them and harassing them to complete workbooks, watch videos or make sales calls.
It’s way more subtle than that.
How you are showing up for them, and what example you are setting them will have a lot to do with whether they are motivated to take action (because at the end of the day, you can’t and should never ‘force’ anyone to do anything - it’s pointless anyway!).
In order to provide value as a coach, you have to be a stickler on this. Because...
2. Your student's success is your success
We are pretty sure that just about every coach would agree with this! As a coach, you should feel every one of your student's successes as if it were your own. We know that seems obvious, but for the sake of going a little DEEPER in our post today, we want to break this down a bit. A great coach truly feels personal satisfaction from their students doing well. They are happier for their students' successes, than they are for their own successes. If you honestly don't feel THAT strongly...it might mean that being a coach isn't your primary calling. And that's okay! But we do think that every coach needs to look inside themselves and answer this question. The best coach isn't doing it for themselves, like in order to say, "I helped 100 people accomplish X, Y, or Z." Instead, the motivation is just their the students. And because of this...
3. "Your life will be full of lessons"
This is a quote from life coach and best-selling author Christine Hassler. What is she talking about here? She's talking about how, when you become a coach, you slowly start to become an entirely NEW person. Christine says in a speech at a summit for fellow coaches,
"When you become a coach, you won't be able to suppress anything. You won't be able not to notice anything. Your life will be full of lessons."
What she’s saying is, when you become a coach, your students will keep teaching YOU more and more. The more you coach, you start becoming more aware of everything around you, more perceptive, and more understanding of not only your students, but of yourself too.
We have to say, we absolutely love this quote from Christine. "Your life will be full of lessons." That's true for everyone, but we agree that it's just as true for coaches and mentors, as it is for students!
