Top 10 Marketing Pillars
If success in marketing is your goal, there is a specific marketing foundation that you should be following religiously.
In the article, “The 24 Modern Marketing Commandments,” Ryan Deiss outlines these foundational must-haves. We have narrowed them down to the top 10 marketing pillars that have evolved from traditional marketing to digital marketing and will grow with whatever follows after. Whether you are new to the entrepreneurial scene or are an old pro, you need these 10 marketing pillars.
Top 10 Marketing Pillars
1) Revenue first, branding second
Branding is a hot topic in the entrepreneurial world. And for good reason! Branding creates a lasting impression on customers and makes a company easily recognizable. But if your business is going to succeed, you have to have revenue coming in (that’s the whole point of business!). As an entrepreneur, your primary goal should be sales. Your business can recover from not having your brand established but cannot survive without revenue.
Your goal will dictate how you approach your social media strategy. For example, if your marketing goal is to bring in more revenue you should focus on sharing links to landing pages and promotions. On the other hand, when you are ready to move forward with branding your business you should share informational content and engage in meaningful conversations with your audience.
2) Write offers, NOT slogans
Slogans are memorable catchphrases that can help identify a company to its consumers. Nike’s “Just Do It” and Apple’s, “Think Different” are just two examples of famous marketing trademarks. While they are catchy, slogans do not make sales.
You can have the most creative and brilliant slogan in the world and not make a single sale. Marketing is so much more than just being creative! Entrepreneurs should focus on writing offers that bring an action (sales).
3) Balance data with gut instinct
Marketing must be data-driven to be effective. While data should drive your decisions nine times out of ten, sometimes you just have to trust your gut.
You are the captain of your business and ultimately have the authority to do what you think is best. If your instincts are telling you to go down an uncommon path, then go for it! Sometimes you just have to know when to throw the book out the window.
4) Be willing to pay for attention and awareness
You could argue all day about paid vs. organic but at the end of a day, a lead is a lead no matter how you get it. It’s like choosing dessert at a buffet. The answer should always be “yes!”.
5) Aim to make some people mad
If you don’t have any haters, you are doing it wrong. The goal of good marketing is to have people on both extremes. You can’t have raving fans without some haters. The two sides work together to shape great marketing. Don’t be afraid to make a strong stand and ruffle some feathers. The opposite of love isn’t hate; it’s apathy.
6) Be specific
You want people to know what your business stands for. Without specific claims and specific content, your brand will never be respected. It’s time to take a stand and be absolute in what you are putting out there to represent your brand.
7) Never stop marketing, even after a sale is made
Your job is not done once the customer makes a purchase. Just like romance shouldn’t end on your wedding day, you should never stop marketing to a customer.
8) Deliver BIG ideas using as few words as possible
Don’t use a lot where a little will do. Sometimes the more complex an idea is, the simpler you should keep it.
9) Use as many words as needed
But they should be the right words! Word choice is so powerful in marketing so choose wisely. Remember marketers: there’s no such thing as too long- only too boring!
10) Deliver at least 2x what you promised
Always under-promise and over-deliver. You will always have a satisfied customer if you give them more than what they were expecting. And a satisfied customer is a returning customer and a returning customer is good for business. In fact, studies show that repeating customers spend 33% more than new customers (hello profit!). And what do happy repeat customers bring with them? Friends who turn into new customers!
